Devon 1912. Tim Wilson has landed the job of his dreams as a newspaper reporter on the Torquay Times. He is also captivated by Katherine Coates, the daughter of a business colleague of his late father. Romance blossoms, but Katherine's mother ruth has her sights set much higher for her daughter's happiness. Tim is neither rich, nor well connected, and Ruth whisks Katherine off to the London scene to meet a suitable husband.
Meanwhile actress Elyse Davenport has arrived from London, bringing a welcome touch of glamour to the English Riviera. Tim realises that an interview with her would be a scoop for the paper. Elyse, however, has a lot more to offer Tim than just a newspaper exclusive. She is as attractive as he is impressionable, as experienced as he is young. As the storm clouds of the Great War gather, the normal rules of life no longer apply.....
